Pedagogic stimulations

Identity means different things to different people. Especially children tend to identify themselves sometimes through similarities and at other times through differences. This process of understanding identity can have many resonating impressions. My constant endeavor is to note, understand and unpack these impressions.

Geography

This book has a direct relation with geography. Children can be shown the world map at the end of the reading. They enjoy showing their countries on a world map. They get an orientation of where they come from, one or many countries if they have parents from different countries. Moreover, they get a grasp of the different shapes and sizes of countries, oceans and continents. These discussions often lead to other trivia regarding ascents, languages and sometimes even politics.

Creative Expression

How we can express ourselves is a unit of inquiry in school curriculums for children in this age group.  Children were interested in knowing about authoring a book themselves and some mentioned their experiences in the school having done so. The possibility of writing and/or illustrating as a creative expression was an interesting topic for the 6 + ages.

The understanding of artistic expression was also discussed and their observations were uncanny. The use of collage backgrounds and single line drawings is a source of many interpretations and this can be used to trigger a discussion about artists and art styles.
